The Sheila A. Sydnor Endowment for the Performing Arts at PAS

Retired, founding principal Sheila Sydnor kept the arts alive at PAS, even in the face of significant budget cuts.

In the spring of 2016, the PAS community honored Sheila Sydnor’s commitment through the establishment of the Sheila A. Sydnor Endowment for the Performing Arts at PAS, an ongoing fund to support performing arts at PAS.

A plaque is displayed outside of our Gym to recognize Ms. Sydnor for her support of the Arts, including ten years of consecutive sold out Broadway musicals at PAS !  The Penn Alexander School community thanks you Ms. Sydnor!

Each Spring, the staff and students of Penn Alexander School present a “Broadway” musical. Past shows have included Beauty and the Beast Jr., Little Mermaid Jr., Seussical, and Lion King Jr.,  Musical accompaniment is provided by the PAS orchestra, and students make up our stage crew, cast and chorus.

Enrichment

Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 can select an elective class that meets two times per week. Enrichment cycles are about 6 weeks in duration, and students can choose a new class each cycle.  Choices for enrichment include Handbells, Badminton, Floor Hockey, Digital Photography, App Design, Art, Robotics, and Student Council. Lower school students can join after school clubs that meet twice a week.  Popular after school programs include the Students Run Philly Style club for middle school students as well as the PAS Lower School Running club.

All Penn Alexander students have the opportunity to choose from a variety of  after-school activities throughout the school year. We offer 4 extra-curricular cycles that are approximately 8 weeks long. After-school clubs  include 5K running club, Students Run Philly Style, Art, Volleyball, Basketball, Tae Kwon Do, Programming, and Cooking.  We also offer the opportunity for students to join clubs such as Girls on the Run and Girls Who Code, as well as WHHY Media Labs film-making club during the winter and spring enrichment cycles.
